Well, It's Over

My second stint as head women's basketball Coach at Cascade College has come to an end. We actually won 3 games in a row towards the end of the season and came within 1 game of reaching the playoffs! An amazing feat really when you think of the adversity this team faced.

Now the search for a new coach begins, resulting in a new frustration for me. The machinations of the bureaucracy are agonizingly slow, even at a small Christian college. We have several highly qualified candidates that are interested in the job, but making it work within the budget is the question.

I certainly have my opinion on what the college can and can't do - or more specifically, what it MUST do in this situation. However, it is out of my hands and I can only pray that God sends us exactly the right person.

This all contributes to my ongoing struggle with the role of athletics in the higher education setting. Cascade is a unique situation, but probably not unlike many other similar colleges. I see the excitement generated and support given at other places and I think, why can't we do the same thing? What is holding our campus back? Perhaps someday soon athletics at Cascade will be embraced by our community, and increasingly seen as a legitimate and valued part of the educational experience for our students.
